HOW CAN WE HELP THE POOR?
Restore Ecosystem Health
Centuries of colonial domination caused serious damage to the ecosystems of communities - the intricate web of relationship between human society, their natural environment, and their moral code. How to pursue legal accountability of multinational enterprises damaging the environment outside their home countries is an urgent problem pending to be solved, especially when environmental issues caused by them are becoming the primary driver of global environmental degradation. Yuling Zhang, Hao Zhao, Manqi Zhu “Poverty is both a cause and a symptom of environmental degradation. You can’t say you’ll start to deal with just one. You’re trapped. When you’re in poverty, you’re trapped because the poorer you become, the more you degrade the environment, and the more you degrade the environment, the poorer you become. So it’s a matter of breaking the cycle.” —from a 2005 interview in The Progressive Wangai Maathai (Nobel Peace Prize 2004)
Restore Local Sovereignty
"Poverty is not created by the poor. It is created by the system we built and we have to change the system". He also noted, "the poor themselves can create a poverty-free world— all we have to do is to free them from the chains that we have put around them" Mohammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize 2006 "In the absence of justice, what is sovereignty but organized robbery?" - Saint Augustine The global markets that govern food systems continue to undermine the rights of Africans to grow and distribute their own food. "When parties and leaders must run a con to win votes, they disqualify themselves as public servants and engage in plundering the futures of our children." Brian Stephenson "There's enough on this planet for everyone's needs but not for everyone's greed." Mahatma Ghandi
“The only way to help the poor is to make them productive”

Our Financial Model
We believe ...
That investing in the poor is a sound and worthy risk. “The poor themselves can create a poverty-free world. All we have to do is to free them from the chains that we have put around them!” We leverage the talents of the poor through social enterprise investment for economic growth. When they rise, we rise with them! Charity only perpetuates poverty by taking the initiative away from the poor. Charity allows us to go ahead with our own lives without worrying about the lives of the poor. Charity appeases our consciences.”― Muhammad Yunus

JIIMARISHE HONEY PROJECT
The Jiimarishe Honey Project empowers residents of marginalized communities in Kenya by creating multiple income streams from their own land through apiculture. Besides the honey, the presence of the bees also helps to catalyze the growth of fruit trees and garden produce to feed the family and the remaining produce is sold for income.
In 2021, PHI did a pilot project with 20 farmers in Gilgil, Kenya. The collaborative venture with the farmers resulted in as much as a five-fold increase in income for the farmers. This increase in income was initiated first be capturing rainwater for consumption and for agriculture. Beekeeping contributed to financial resilience and improved the overall well-being of their families. Beneficiaries included a significant percentage of elderly women and persons living with disabilities.
